What is the Veterans Village?
Since 2012, Habitat for Humanity of Lake-Sumter has focused on a Veterans Housing Initiative evolving into the current Veterans Village project – the first of its kind, and hopefully succeeded by several more. Located in the heart of Umatilla, the village is a 14-home development intended to bring value of life to our service men and women. Planned in a Florida cottage “pocket community” design, the village will have an old-time feel, where front porch sitting and knowing your neighbors is encouraged. The location is beautifully situated on Lake Enola, with walk able access to downtown and near the local bus line.
Each unit will be ADA compliant, energy efficient to the highest standards, and sustainable. Habitat for Humanity of Lake-Sumter, in agreement with the city of Umatilla, will remain responsible for the upkeep of the grounds and external repairs of the homes for the life of the neighborhood.
The Veterans Village is a collaborative project that not only provides access to affordable quality housing, but offers holistic wraparound services to the residents through a partnership with Combat Veterans to Careers. They will offer 360 degrees of support services in: career, mental and physical health, transportation, finances, education, navigating the VA, and legal – any needs the veterans may have.
Why the Veterans Village?
According to Veterans Affairs 1.6 million veterans live in Florida; 45,000 reside in Lake and Sumter Counties.
Transitioning from the service to civilian life isn’t easy. A safe, affordable home assists in the transition not only financially, but mentally, providing our veterans with a peace of mind. A home is where we feel safe, where we connect with our families, and where we establish ourselves within our community. Habitat for Humanity of Lake-Sumter believes that our veterans deserve a place to call home.
