This Month: Veterans Housing Initiative

Approximately 1.4 million veterans are at risk of homelessness due to high housing costs and low incomes (source: National Coalition for Homeless Veterans). This November, Habitat for Humanity of Lake-Sumter is seeking to serve our community’s heroes and help provide veterans with access to safe, affordable housing through our Veterans Housing Initiative.

Through Habitat Lake-Sumter’s Veterans Housing Initiative, you can ensure our veterans are a priority of those we serve by providing homes, community, and hope to U.S. Veterans, military service members, and their families.

The Veterans Housing Initiative seeks to help veterans and their families find the housing assistance they need, whether that means a chance at home ownership or help with home repairs and accessibility modifications. Through the Veterans Housing Initiative, we are also able to provide our community’s veterans with access and referrals to additional wrap-around services like food security, health and wellness resources, and financial counseling.

We successfully launched our Veterans Housing initiative with the completion of a 14-unit pocket neighborhood, The Umatilla Veterans Village, in 2018. Since then, our program has grown to include new construction, preservation, and critical home repairs for veterans throughout Lake and Sumter Counties.

Through our Veterans Housing Initiative, we are also able to partner with other organizations that provide services for veterans. Last year, we partnered with Homes For Veterans, who helped us completely revitalize Vietnam Veteran John Prescott’s home to make it safe and accessible for him to navigate.

Because of the continued generosity and support of our community, we can serve our community’s veterans and provide them with the dignity our veterans deserve.
