We are deeply saddened by the passing of President Jimmy Carter. His lifelong commitment to service, especially through Habitat for Humanity, leaves a legacy that continues to inspire many to work and advocate for decent housing for all.
Carter, who served as the 39th President of the United States from 1977 to 1981, became a prominent advocate for affordable housing and social justice. In 1984, the first Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project was initiated—a six-story apartment building renovation in New York City that helped provide 19 families .
Over more than 35 years, the Carters led the Work Project, bringing together over 108,100 volunteers who have helped build, renovate, or repair more than 4,447 homes in 14 countries.
Their commitment to service has positively impacted thousands by providing decent housing and has inspired countless others to take action. As his grandson Jason Carter once said, “It’s amazing what you can cram into 100 years.”
To honor his legacy, we invite you to visit the memorial installation dedicated to him at the Eustis ReStore (710 S Bay St, Eustis, FL 32726). This installation stands as a testament to his dedication to humanity and the values he championed throughout his life. The memorial will be open to the public starting at 10 AM on January 30th and will remain accessible through the end of February.
Let’s honor his legacy by working together towards a future where everyone has access to a safe and decent place to live.
