Low-income families that are priced out of the current housing market may have a lifeline.

Habitat for Humanity of Lake-Sumter is accepting applications for their homeownership program.

Over the next few months Habitat will be building six homes for which they are seeking homeowners, four in Coleman and two in Eustis.

The homes that are being built in Coleman are test models of Habitat’s cottage-sized homes which are 710 to 730 square feet with two bedrooms and one bathroom to accommodate two to three people. The goal of the cottage-sized homes is to provide affordable housing for those entering the market or those needing to downsize.

“As for the Coleman lots, they are standard in size and Sumter County was very welcoming to the idea of cottages — their codes allow a home as small as 600 square feet,” said the Director of Development Danielle Stroud.

Applicants for the homes must meet credit and income criteria, have a demonstrable need and be willing to partner with Habitat through sweat equity hours and financial education courses.

To find out how to apply, go to habitatls.org/programs/home-ownership/qualifications/ or call Samantha Rocker, program coordinator at 352-483-0434, Ext. 110.
