Meet Rebecca: Turning the Page to a New Chapter

Mar 6, 2026 | Newsletter

Rebecca is a devoted mom, proud grandmother, and lifelong lover of family pets who have brought her so much joy over the years. After retiring several years ago, she stepped into a new role as caretaker for the people who mattered most to her — her husband, brother, and mother. Caring for her loved ones became Rebecca’s full-time purpose, and she poured her heart and energy into that season of life.

When that chapter eventually came to an end, Rebecca found herself facing life alone for the first time in many years. Along with the emotional weight of that transition came a very real challenge: finding safe, affordable housing that would allow her to remain independent without becoming a burden to her grown children.

During that uncertain time, a friend suggested she reach out to Habitat for Humanity of Lake-Sumter — a decision that would soon change everything.

Rebecca recalls that meeting the Habitat team felt like “a breath of fresh air.” Their passion, compassion, and deep knowledge of the Habitat process brought Rebecca immediate comfort and clarity. What once felt overwhelming suddenly felt manageable, and the path forward began to take shape.

Through Habitat’s affordable homeownership program, future homeowners partner with Habitat by completing sweat equity hours and purchasing their homes through an affordable mortgage. Although Rebecca has always been someone who relied on herself, this partnership model made the experience empowering rather than burdensome. She embraced every opportunity to give back to the Habitat community, helping with office mail-outs, volunteering at Lady Lake’s Centennial Celebration, and proudly participating in the Jingle Build-Off during the holidays.

From the very beginning, the Habitat Lake-Sumter team surrounded Rebecca with care, encouragement, and genuine support. Whether it was a reassuring conversation, a quick hug, or a shared laugh, she quickly discovered that Habitat was more than an organization — it was a community.

Today, Rebecca is preparing to begin a new chapter in her home at the Cottages at Heritage Grove, Habitat Lake-Sumter’s 55+ community. For her, this opportunity represents far more than a home. It means independence, stability, and peace for the future.

Rebecca’s story is possible because of the generosity of volunteers, donors, and community partners who believe everyone deserves a safe and affordable place to call home. She is deeply grateful for this support and for the chance to move forward with hope and truly live her best life.
