“I joined the construction academy to change lives, and I have.”
At just 18 years old, Jolin Spafford from The Villages Charter School is already making an impact that will last for generations.
Jolin knows one thing for certain. She will be a teacher.
When she first joined Habitat Lake-Sumter’s Youth Construction Academy, she thought she wanted to operate heavy equipment. As she grew in the program, she discovered a passion for leadership and project management. The Academy strengthened skills she will carry with her into the classroom one day.
What surprised her most was not just the construction skills she gained. It was the people.
Through the Academy, Jolin gained perspective. She learned how to approach situations differently, how to communicate with more respect, and how to better understand others. In the process, she began to understand herself more, too. She says the program helped her become less critical of herself and more confident in her abilities.
One of her proudest moments came during the Dry-In Celebration for the Habitat homeowner whose house she is helping build. Jolin gave a heartfelt speech, and when she saw the look on the homeowner’s face and her daughter standing beside her, the impact of the work became real.
“It really made me proud of the work I have accomplished”
The Youth Construction Academy did more than teach Jolin how to build a home.
It helped her build confidence.
It helped her grow.
It showed her that she truly can change lives.
And she already has.
