Robert Stankiewicz, 73, has lived in Florida for 18 years after moving from Wisconsin, and he has spent that entire time in his home in Wildwood. A U.S. Navy Air veteran, Robert has built a quiet life there over the years.
Recently, though, things have become much more difficult.
Living on a fixed income, Robert was facing major repairs he couldn’t afford. His roof needed to be replaced, his bathroom needed modifications, and parts of his home had fallen into disrepair. At the same time, he received a diagnosis of Stage 4 lung cancer and continues to manage other serious health conditions, including diverticulitis and herniated discs.
“I didn’t know how I was going to take care of it all,” Robert said. “Some things are just out of reach.”
He learned about Habitat for Humanity Lake-Sumter’s repair program through the VA, and it gave him a sense of relief during a very uncertain time.
Now, with Habitat Lake-Sumter and Harper Family Charitable Foundation’s help, the repairs he needs are finally happening. His home is becoming safer and more manageable, which means he can focus more on his health and less on what’s going wrong around him.
“This means so much to me,” he shared. “I’m just really thankful for the help.”
For Robert, his home is where he feels most at ease, especially now. These repairs are not just about fixing a house. They are about giving him stability and a little peace of mind during a difficult season.
Stories like Robert’s are a reminder of how important this work is and what can happen when a community comes together to support one another.
