For the past several weeks, Habitat for Humanity of Lake-Sumter has been celebrating the start of another year of its Youth Construction Academy, bringing hands-on learning and real-world experience to students at Eustis High, Leesburg High and Wildwood Middle High.

The program gives students an opportunity to take what they learn in the classroom and put those skills to work on an actual construction project. Along the way, students gain valuable experience in the building trades while learning teamwork, responsibility and the importance of giving back to their community.

But the Youth Construction Academy is about more than learning how to build a house. Students are helping build something that will eventually become a home for a local family.
