Take the First Step Toward Homeownership

Feb 2, 2026 | Newsletter

For many people, the dream of homeownership feels just out of reach, not because of a lack of effort, but because the path forward can feel overwhelming or unclear.

That is why Habitat for Humanity of Lake-Sumter is offering a free six-week Financial Literacy Course designed to help individuals and families build the knowledge and confidence needed to take meaningful steps toward owning a home.

This virtual course walks participants through essential financial topics, including budgeting and money management, saving strategies, fraud protection, credit and debt management, and homebuying basics. Participants will also learn more about Habitat Lake-Sumter’s Homeownership Program and what it means to partner with Habitat on the journey to owning a home.

Classes will be held online from 6 to 7 pm on the following dates: March 5, March 12, March 19, March 26, April 2, and April 9. To receive a certificate of completion, participants must attend all six sessions.

That certificate can be shared with Habitat staff when applying for the Homeownership Program and shows a strong commitment to the process. For those who are approved for a Habitat home within two years of completing the course, the time spent in class will also count toward required sweat equity hours.

This program is open to community members who live or work in Lake or Sumter Counties, are able to attend all class dates, and are willing to partner with Habitat Lake-Sumter throughout the course. While completing the workshop does not guarantee approval for Habitat’s Homeownership Program, it provides valuable tools and guidance for anyone working toward financial stability and long-term housing goals.

Registration for the Financial Literacy Course opens February 6 and closes February 26.

If homeownership is part of your future goals, this course is a powerful place to begin.
